Swimmers evacuate as chilling footage shows tiger shark metres from shore
Swimmers at Brighton Beach, near Scarborough, were forced to evacuate the ocean after the three-metre shark was spotted by Surf Life Saving WA’s rescue helicopter today at about 9.15am (12.15pm AEDT).
It was seen swimming just 20 metres from the shore.
The shark’s size and proximity to shore prompted the beach lifesaving crew to sound the shark alarm and about 280 people fled the area, Surf Life Saving WA said.
Video shared on Facebook of the shark shows it circling dangerously close to swimmers.
“Thank you to our crew for keeping a watchful eye and ensuring our beaches remain safe,” Surf Live Saving WA said in a message to social media.
Early-morning swimmers had flocked to the popular beach early this morning as temperatures spiked at 39-degrees in Perth today.
Tiger sharks are attracted to warmer ocean waters and the ocean predators are sometimes spotted on coastlines and near the shore.
Tiger shark bites, though rare, can be fatal.
