You know, you may have had a bad day – but if it’s any consolation, Gladys Berejiklian’s day might’ve been worse. The now-former NSW Premier announced her resignation today following the announcement that she is the subject of an Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) investigation. An ICAC statement said it would be investigating whether Berejiklian “breached public trust” during her secret relationship with former Wagga Wagga MP Daryl Maguire. Berejiklian gave an impassioned farewell speech in Sydney this morning, stating that she had “no option” but to resign. “My resignation as Premier could not happen at a worse time, but the timing is completely outside of my control as the ICAC has chosen to take this action during the most challenging weeks of the most challenging times in the history of NSW,” she said. “Resigning at this time is against every instinct in my being and something which I do not want to do; I love my job and serving the community, but I have been given no option following the statement issued.” Berejiklian, love her or hate her, has led the state through some pretty tough times in the past few years. From fires and floods to the Delta outbreak – there’s no doubt it’s been a historical time for the state. Some might even say Berejiklian’s resignation is yet another feather in 2021’s hat. Though this news might’ve over-shadowed other events of the day – there were some important developments worth noting. Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced that international travel would be back on the cards next month. Though don’t get too excited; there are still thousands of Aussies stuck overseas who have faced lengthy delays and cancelled flights in their efforts to get home. Fully-vaccinated Aussies and their family members will also be able to undergo home quarantine in states and territories able to implement the system. Medical professionals are concerned the crackdown on vaping announced today could lead to “doctor shopping”. It was already illegal to sell e-cigarette products without a prescription, but now the border force will have the power to intercept vaping products sent from overseas. From one type of smoke to another – bushfire season is well and truly underway, but don’t be fooled by recent rain. NSW RFS Inspector David Stimson predictions of a wetter than normal spring should not “lead residents into complacency”. “These conditions will encourage fuel growth and warmer drier weather expected early in the new year may present some challenges, particularly with grass fires,” he said. The Victorian Government has followed NSW and now mandated COVID-19 vaccines for all authorised workers, including teachers and healthcare workers. Tasmania has also moved to close its borders to parts of VIC amidst the state’s growing outbreak. It’s been a day of big announcements; one can only imagine what the next few weeks will bring.
