AFL grand final 2023 LIVE updates: ‘We did it’: Moore elated as Collingwood win premiership; Bobby Hill claims Norm Smith Medal
Nick Daicos has received his premiership medal from a young child in a wheelchair and the after putting the medal around Nick’s neck, he told the player “you should be very proud”.
A moment before they showed a beaming Peter Daicos after Nick’s name was called out.
What a lovely moment.
Collingwood have made history in one of the classic grand finals – equalling Essendon and Carlton with 16.
The Pies were mighty in an extraordinary final quarter which saw Brisbane hit the front after 18 minutes when Charlie Cameron broke the Lions’ goal drought and three consecutive behinds – courtesy of Daniher, Hipwood and Coleman.
But Jordan De Goey put the Pies back in front a minute later and then Steele Sidebottom goaled following a Jarrod Berry brain fade, when he gave away a 50-metre penalty.
It was gripping until the final seconds – Joe Daniher narrowed the margin to four. But in the end, Collingwood’s legs lasted longer. More than 100,000 – roughly 70 per cent of whom were Collingwood – pushed them over the line.
Heartbreak for Chris Fagan’s Lions, who kicked more goals but couldn’t win.
The seat-edges at Brisbane’s South Bank Piazza got a serious workout in the final minutes there. (The ones some Lions fans hadn’t vacated to pace the aisles anyway).
The structural integrity of the stands were tested too, after that last Charlie Cameron goal, before Collingwood ultimately spoiled the party here in Brisbane.
Some cheers of joy from those few in black and white, some tears from those in maroon.
“I think it hurts more when you lose by a small margin,” one of the Lions fans offered as they filed out after the final siren.
And there was consolation from Lions fan Emma — one of those pacing — to her eight-year-old son Farris, who commanded a flag in the front row the entire game.
“[They did a] good job for making it this far,” he said of his first chance to catch Brisbane in the final.
There is always next year, after all.
Bobby Hill has been mobbed by his teammates after being named the Norm Smith medallist.
This is his first season with the Magpies, what a win.
“To everyone at the Collingwood football club, thank you for obviously making me and my family welcome here. To the Collingwood faithful, we love you guys. Up the Pies,” Hill said.
Darcy Moore spoke with Channel Seven post game.
How does that feel?
It’s so surreal. I grew up a Collingwood supporter. I was here in 2010, 2003, 2002, in the stands and it feels surreal, it is just bizarre. So much work goes in for so long, so much has to go right to pull it off today. And we did it.
Tense moment. The De Goey goal and then Steele Sidebottom popping up as well. What is running through your mind in the last couple of minutes of an epic Grand Final?
Just incredible. It was fun to play. I’m sure it was fun to watch. We said at half-time what an incredible game it is. Hill, unbelievable. Jordy’s goal. Steele’s goal, incredible and Brisbane were just unbelievable all day. They just kept coming at us. I’m lost for words.

The Magpies players are elated after that win.
Scott Pendlebury has his arms in the air, Bobby Hill has a big smile and Darcy Moore and Peter Moore are embracing in the middle of the MCG.
This is how they pictured it.
Lions players are laying flat on their backs, they gave their all.
Lachie Neale looks stunned they haven’t won.
The Lions are still in it.
McCluggage snapped the ball from the boundary to the middle and Daniher marked it and then played on kicking the goal.
McCluggage only just kept the ball in and kept his side alive.
Magpies 90, Lions 86 with 90 seconds to go.
Steele Sidebottom has come up with a mammoth kick from outside 50m after a 50m penalty against the Lions brought him within range.
Sidebottom is one of the few holdovers from the 2010 premiership, along with Pendlebury.
The crowd is roaring again, are the Magpies home?
