Greenland residents overwhelmingly opposed to Trump’s takeover plan

Greenlanders are overwhelmingly opposed to being annexed by the United States, a new poll has shown.
The poll conducted by Verian for Danish newspaper Berlingske showed 85 per cent of Greenland residents do not want their island to be part of the United States.

Another nine per cent were undecided.

Just six per cent of the island was in favour of becoming part of the US.

Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark and locals there are considering the prospect of independence.

US president Donald Trump has floated the idea of using military action to seize the island.

He has also suggested either buying Greenland or pressuring Denmark using tariffs to give it up.

Greenland, which is about the size of Western Australia, is in an important strategic location in the North Atlantic and is already home to a substantial number of US military personnel.

The island also has a vast amount of untapped mineral wealth. Climate change has made those underground minerals more accessible in recent years.

The autonomous territory has a population of about 57,000 people.

Earlier this week Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen announced A$3.2 billion to boost defence in its external territories of Greenland and the Faeroe Islands.

The money was to “improve capabilities for surveillance and maintaining sovereignty in the region”.

“We must face the fact that there are serious challenges regarding security and defense in the Arctic and North Atlantic,” Danish Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said.

“For this reason, we must strengthen our presence in the region.”
