Princess Beatrice ‘besotted’ after giving birth to second daughter

Princess Beatrice of York has given birth to her second child, named Athena, Buckingham Palace has announced.

Athena was born several weeks premature, but is said to be healthy and doing well.

Beatrice, 36, gave birth on January 22 at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in London.

In a social media post, Beatrice’s husband, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi said his new daughter was “tiny and absolutely perfect”.

“We are all (including Wolfie and Sienna) already completely besotted with her,” he said.

“Our hearts are overflowing with love for you, baby Athena.

“A massive thank you from my wife and I goes out to all the wonderful staff at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for their exceptional care and support during this incredibly special time.”

The statement from Buckingham Palace gave the baby’s full name as Athena Elizabeth Rose Mapelli Mozzi.

The newborn’s middle name is likely a tribute to Princess Beatrice’s grandmother, the late Queen Elizabeth II, whom she was very close to.

“The baby was born weighing 4 pounds and 5 ounces,” the statement read.

“The King and Queen, and other members of The Royal Family have all been informed and are delighted with the news.”

Athena is the fourth grandchild for Prince Andrew and Sarah, Duchess of York. She now becomes 11th in line to the throne.

Beatrice’s mother Fergie and sister Princess Eugenie also celebrated the baby’s arrival on social media.

“Overflowing with love and joy to be able to welcome Athena Elizabeth Rose into the world. She is already so adored and I’m incredibly blessed to be a Granny once again. So proud of Edo, Beatrice and the rest of my little 5-a-side team!” the duchess wrote on Instagram.

Eugenie said: “Welcome baby girl!” on an Instagram story.

The non-working royal couple wed in July 2020 at the Royal Chapel of All Saints at Royal Lodge in Windsor Great Park and welcomed their daughter Sienna in September the following year.

Mapelli Mozzi also has a son called Wolfie, 8, from a previous relationship.
