‘Stay safe’: Green Day’s message to fans after concert cancelled

Cyclone Alfred has thrown sporting and entertainment events across south-east Queensland into chaos as it bears down on the coast.

AFL and NRL games have been shifted or postponed with a major golf tournament, Green Day rock concert and other events cancelled entirely.

Thursday night’s AFL season opener between the Brisbane Lions and Geelong Cats will be postponed after the threat to player and fan safety was deemed too great a risk to play through.

“It feels like we’re back in COVID, with all this uncertainty. It wasn’t that long ago so all those feelings have come flooding back,” Lions coach Chris Fagan said.

“I’ve seen the carnage that they’ve caused at different points in Australian history so I’m not to keen on the idea of things going ahead if it’s going to be like that – well, it can’t can it.”

The Lions and the Cats have a bye in the third round so that may be a viable option for a rescheduled game.

The AFL is also postponing Saturday’s Suns and Essendon game at Carrara, with a new date to be advised.

In the NRL, the Dolphins were due to host the Rabbitohs on Friday night at Suncorp Stadium. That game will now be played at Sydney’s Commbank Stadium with the reverse fixture in round 17 to be held on the Gold Coast.

Millions brace for Cyclone Alfred as wind and rain forecast to smash coast

The Brisbane Roar have called off Women’s A-League match at Perry Park on Saturday and would likely move it to next week.

The Australian Boardriders Battle grand final, the Queensland Surf Life Saving Championships, WPGA tournament and Mooloolaba Triathlon have all been either cancelled or postponed.

Organisers for tomorrow’s Green Day concert at CBUS Stadium and the band themselves apologised to fans for having to cancel the gig.

“Unfortunately due to circumstances out of our control, tomorrow’s Gold Coast show has been canceled,” the punk rockers said.

“With Cyclone Alfred bringing some seriously nasty weather, it’s just not possible to go ahead safely.

“We know this is a huge disappointment, and we’re just as bummed as you are. Stay safe out there!”

Saturday’s Jewel Race Meeting, also on the Gold Coast, is under threat.

Further cancellations, including junior and amateur sports, smaller community events and local markets, are likely.
