World Cup qualifiers 2025 LIVE: Socceroos cruise to vital 2-0 win over China
Key posts
FULL-TIME: China 0-0 Australia
And there it is!
Two wins in a row for Australia and the first clean sheet of the Tony Popovic era.
The Socceroos, with this 2-0 win, have taken a big step towards automatic qualification for the 2026 World Cup, thanks to those first-half goals from Jackson Irvine and Nishan Velupillay.
You can only beat what’s in front of you, and let’s be honest, China weren’t much chop. For a match they had to win, and with a capacity crowd of nearly 80,000 fans present at Hangzhou, they offered almost nothing. From the outset, Australia looked very comfortable and more than equal to the task.

Irvine’s 16th-minute strike franked their early performance with a reward on the scoreboard, as well as his own growth as a midfield leader for the Socceroos, with his season in the Bundesliga clearly helping to sharpen all of his instincts.
Velupillay made it 2-0 in the 29th minute but, frankly, should thank Chinese goalkeeper Wang Dalei, whose limp effort at saving an otherwise elementary shot summed up their night.
Team Dragon finally fired a few shots of note in the second half but Popovic’s men saw out the match professionally, preserving what is a three-point lead they now boast over third-placed Saudi Arabia in Group C.
The other major takeaway was the sterling debut of Ryan Teague, who was handed his first international start by the manager who signed him at Melbourne Victory two years ago. He did not look out of place for a moment.

Final substitution by the Socceroos
Martin Boyle off, Daniel Arzani on.

Three minutes of stoppage time to come
…they’re nearly there, the Socceroos. Just a couple more minutes to see out.

China knocking at the door…
These last 10 minutes are going to be fairly stressful, I think. The Socceroos have thrown numbers behind the ball, China know they have to do everything possible to try and find a breakthrough…
More changes made by Popovic, by the way. Brandon Borrello and Nishan Velupillay are off, Mitch Duke and Anthony Caceres have come on. A winger for a midfielder. Interesting. I’d imagine Caceres will move into some sort of No.10-ish role behind Duke, and everyone else will get in the trenches.

Double change for Australia
Yep, there’s the move by Popovic: Ryan Teague and Lewis Miller are summoned off. Aiden O’Neill and Fran Karacic come on; the latter being a bit of a shut-up-shop move by the Socceroos coach, by way of being a more defensively minded right-sided player than Miller.

A word on Ryan Teague
He’s not looked out of place for a moment, has he? Slotted straight into that midfield, safe in possession but adventurous in the pass, and also really strong with set pieces. Nobody who’s watched him closely in the A-League for Melbourne Victory will be surprised by that, including Tony Popovic, who obviously knows all about him. Terrific addition to the Australian XI here.
Speaking of Popovic… no changes thus far. Probably time for one, Tony, just to keep things fresh?

FULL-TIME in Saitama: Japan 0-0 Saudi Arabia
Well, not a perfect night for the Socceroos after all.
Saudi Arabia has held on for a 0-0 draw in Japan and that’s a very valuable point for them. It means – assuming the current score holds in Hangzhou – that Australia will have just a three-point lead over the third-placed Saudis heading into the June window.
Basically, that means Australia definitely can’t lose to Saudi Arabia when they meet on the final match day. And they may also need to get something off Japan, too, in Perth.
We’ll deal with the machinations later. The Socceroos still have just over 30 minutes of football to see out in China.
Degenek! So close!
A really good chance has just gone begging for the Socceroos, from a corner kick! It floated all the way to the back stick, Milos Degenek was there, he had a free hit at it, but could only volley his shot wide of the left post.
That would have killed it off for good. But China lives to fight on…
