Bureau warns of risk of flash flooding in SEQ

By Felicity Caldwell

A low-pressure system that has been dumping rain over western and central Queensland will slowly move towards south-east Queensland in the coming days, forecasters say.

Meteorologist Helen Reid, with the Bureau of Meteorology, said that would bring widespread rain to much of Queensland and northern NSW.

Reid said there could be high rainfall totals of 100mm to 200mm along coastal parts from the Queensland central coast south to the NSW border.

“The heaviest rain will likely be on Friday and Saturday in those areas, and as catchments are already wet, particularly in north-east NSW and south-east Queensland we could see increasing flash and riverine flooding, depending on exactly where those heaviest falls occur,” she said.

The forecast heavy rain comes less than three weeks after Cyclone Alfred brought high rainfall totals, wind and flooding to south-east Queensland and northern NSW.

Yesterday afternoon, Seqwater advised operational releases from Somerset Dam had started and could continue into early next week pending rainfall.

The low-flow releases were to transfer water to Wivenhoe Dam to balance levels, and there were no water releases planned for Wivenhoe Dam.

Couple accused of killing baby face court ahead of trial

By Cloe Read

A mother accused of murdering her seven-month-old boy has chosen not to enter a plea at her court arraignment, as the boy’s father pleaded not guilty.

Rhuan Immanuel Bosch was found unresponsive by emergency services at the couple’s home at Yugar, north of Brisbane, in November 2022.

The boy’s parents, Reinhardt Albert Bosch and Noemi Kondacs, were later charged over the incident, and Kondacs has consistently refused legal representation throughout court proceedings.

The pair appeared in the Supreme Court in Brisbane on Thursday for their arraignment ahead of their trial later this year.

All Woolworths stores in the state are impacted, and will offer a full refund on affected produce.

American firm offers ‘best and final’ bid for Nine-controlled Domain

By Calum Jaspan

American firm CoStar has made an improved offer for Nine’s majority-owned digital real estate listings business Domain Group.

CoStar, led by CEO Andy Florence, who was in Australia this week, tabled a new bid of $4.43 per share to acquire 100 per cent of the company.

Domain’s board has unanimously decided to engage with CoStar, and subject to entering into an appropriate confidentiality agreement and exclusivity and process agreement, facilitate appropriate due diligence access to Domain, it said in an ASX announcement.

The bid represents a 42 per cent premium on Domain’s closing share price on February 20, it said, and a 5.5 per cent rise on the previous offer.

CoStar said its latest proposal was the best and final price it was willing to offer, in the absence of a competing proposal.

Nine, which owns this masthead, is the majority shareholder for Domain, with a 60 per cent stake.

Speaking to Triple M Hobart radio this morning, Anthony Albanese again confirmed what we already know: that the election will be in May.

“And it’ll be called pretty imminently, I can assure you of that as well,” he said.

Probed for more specifics, the PM ruled out calling the election today but repeated that he would “call it soon”.

“I think that Australians want to get on with it,” he said, “Certainly my caucus colleagues do.”

Dutton says cost of tax cuts better spent on fuel excise policy

By Josefine Ganko

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has confirmed the Coalition would repeal Labor’s latest tax cuts if it wins government, after shadow treasurer Angus Taylor first announced the stance earlier this morning.

Speaking to 2GB radio, Dutton confirmed his intention, saying the $17 billion cost of the tax cuts was better spent elsewhere.

“We think the more efficient spend of that money is in relation to the announcement we’ve made this morning reducing by 25 cents the price of petrol and diesel.”

Dutton going ‘back to the Morrison playbook’: PM

By Olivia Ireland

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has dismissed Opposition Leader Peter Dutton’s $6 billion pledge to cut the fuel excise, the key cost of living policy he is set to announce in tonight’s budget reply speech.

Albanese told ABC Sydney radio the pledge failed to help voters during the cost of living crisis in the long term.

“What we’ve put in place is cheaper medicines, cheaper childcare, fee-free TAFE, a cut in student debt of 20 per cent from July immediately for people’s HECs debts, on top of the $3 billion that we have already cut from student debt. We’ve introduced and now passed tax cuts to top up our tax cuts that we put in last year,” he said.

“What [Dutton] has done is gone back to the Morrison playbook. I mean, this is the Morrison government. This is what Scott Morrison in the 2022 budget [did], but then it disappeared because it was time-limited. This is time-limited as well, just for one year, no ongoing cost of living health, no structural change, just higher taxes in the future.”

Two men, a 32-year-old man from Griffin and a 31-year-old man from Birkdale, have been charged with murder, armed robbery, kidnapping and torture.

It will be alleged all the men were known to each other.

Police are also seeking dashcam or CCTV footage.

Taylor denies fuel excise cut is election bribe

By Josefine Ganko

Shadow Treasurer Angus Taylor says the Coalition’s fuel excise cut is “temporary, targeted and responsible” as he promotes the opposition’s key cost of living proposal.

After denying the fuel excise was the Coalition’s version of an election bribe, Taylor said those under the most stress in our economy were mortgage-holders in the suburbs and regions, who are “often double-income families with two cars”.

“This is temporary, it’s very targeted, it’s responsible and it’s focused on that group that we think are under the most pressure at this time given Labor’s cost-of-living crisis,” he told ABC News Breakfast.

Taylor defended its temporary nature, arguing it was aimed at solving the underlying cost and standard of living crisis and therefore was only needed short term.

“What Labor is doing by doing something permanent is telling us we’re going to have a permanent cost of living crisis.”

He added that a two-car household would save on average $28 a week or $1500 a year.
