‘Shut myself up’: US golfer tapes his mouth to control emotional outbursts
American golfer Ryan McCormick has endured a challenging time on the US developmental tour this year, so he decided to control his emotions by taping his mouth shut.
McCormick made the peculiar move at this week’s tournament at The Landings Golf and Athletic Club in Savannah, Georgia.
“Been having not-so-fun times this year on the golf course. Pretty angry and mad,” McCormick told the tour’s social media channels.
“So I figured I’ve tried a lot of things, and I just figured I’d shut myself up. So I put tape over my mouth.”

Did it work?
Not judged on his score. After opening with a 1-over 73, he posted a 72 in the second round and missed the cut.
McCormick, who had a year on the PGA Tour in 2024, said he tried other methods of improving his game, such as reading books and talking to people.
But nothing seems to work for the 33-year-old, who turned professional in 2014.

“I’ve run out of ideas, and I thought about the tape thing a couple of weeks ago,” McCormick said.
“So just unfortunately it came down to that today. I was hoping maybe it would help me. Can’t say that it did or didn’t.”
One reason for the extraordinary move was McCormick said he did not want to create a negative experience for his playing partners.
“Having a tough time, and that was my solution today,” he said.
