Brisbane news live: Crisafulli wants ‘equity’ in renewable energy approvals
Crisafulli wants ‘equity’ in renewable energy approvals
By Matt Dennien
Premier David Crisafulli headed to Rockhampton yesterday afternoon as part of his post-election regional pilgrimage.
Asked by a journalist there about long-floated but little-detailed changes to ensure renewable energy projects get “no special treatment”, he went a little further than he has in the past.
There needs to be equity in the planning assessment. And whether or not you’re applying to do an agricultural pursuit, mining or renewable energy, you should be treated equally in the eyes of the law.
And if we do that, you give the ability for the community to come on the journey, and they will be able to see where renewable projects meet those thresholds, where they are good corporate citizens, where they comply with environmental laws, well, then those renewable projects will be embraced by the community.
What’s happening at the moment is they haven’t had the same treatment as agriculture and mining, and as a result, you have a lot of community angst, and that has to change. And there is a role for renewables – they have to be good corporate citizens, they have to play by the right environmental rules, and if they do that, the community will come on the journey.”
We’re set to sweat all the way into the weekend
The heat is on, again. Today we’re expecting a top of 33 degrees in Brisbane, with an even warmer day forecast for tomorrow. And the Bureau of Meteorology predicts more storm activity in the region’s west this afternoon or evening.
