Flooding fears as ex-cyclone Alfred makes slow journey across mainland

More on that corrugated iron roof that was seen blown onto power lines in Redcliffe: Nine’s Alison Piotrowski has tracked down the house it came from – a two-storey fibro house overlooking the beach that is now rather conspicuously missing the front of its roof.

“Redcliffe was hit pretty badly overnight, absolutely hammered with gale force winds, rain coming in sideways,” Piotrowski said on Weekend Today a short time ago.

“That has abated a little bit for the moment. I did look at the forecast too, though, and it’s not looking great.

“But that roof actually ended up a block over… that slab of corrugated iron is still hanging really precariously from a power line.

“Police have cordoned off that area, keeping people away, but the problem is they can’t get in there and pull it down and restore power to the area until this weather system moves on. And at the moment, we’re not quite sure when that’s going to be.

“A gale warning is in place, a flood warning is in place here, but the good news is, I guess, that the tide is out at the moment. What normally happens in this area is, when the high tide comes in and there’s bad rain, all of this area tends to flood.

“At the moment though, the tide is out thankfully.”
