$900 hardship payments available for Alfred-hit families

KEY EVENTS

Eligible communities affected by ex-tropical cyclone Alfred will have access to short-term relief payments through the government’s Disaster Recovery Allowance, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed this morning. Applications will open at 2pm tomorrow through the myGov website.

The Personal Hardship Assistance Scheme will also be activated for impacted residents in the Logan, Gold Coast and Redlands council areas to compensate for emergency costs, replacement of damaged household goods and reconnection services.

Albanese has warned the public that Alfred and its impacts were “far from over” as flooding continues to submerge parts of northern NSW and south-east Queensland.

Severe weather warnings remain in place for parts of the Northern Rivers, Northwest Slopes and Plains, Northern Tablelands and Mid North Coast, while flood warnings continue for south-east Queensland including Brisbane, Gold Coast, Logan and Ipswich council areas.

Almost 230,000 houses and businesses are still without power across Queensland and NSW.
