A huge fire that created a “wall of smoke” was still burning overnight and within metres of homes as residents posted harrowing images as they were told to evacuate immediately.
The inferno, in Rockingham, south of Perth, started at around 2pm Thursday afternoon amid temperatures of 39C.
It also threatened Rockingham Hospital and engulfed a rail line, leaving locals fearing for their lives and commuter chaos on the roads.
Images from above showed a line of flames inching towards houses and threatening businesses while a north-westerly forced many to flee.
The fire has been downgraded to a “Watch and Act” but authorities warn there is still a possible threat to lives and homes as the fire burns in the area amid changing conditions. So far almost 100 hectares has been burnt.
The warning relates to residents bounded by Crompton Road and Mandurah Road to the north, Wellard Road to the east, Wellard Road across to Ennis Avenue to the south and west in parts of Leda, Wellard, Hillman, East Rockingham and Colloongup in the city of Rockingham and Kwinana.
“If you are not prepared or you plan to leave, leave now if the way is clear,” Emergency WA advised.
“If you are well prepared and plan to actively defend your home, make final preparations now.
“If you plan to stay and actively defend, do not rely on mains water pressure as it may be affected.
“You need to have access to an independent water supply, and start patrolling your property to put out spot fires.
“Keep doors and windows closed and turn off evaporative air conditioners, but keep water running through the system if possible.
“If you are not at home, do not try to return as conditions in the area could be very dangerous.”
